Hello. Welcome.

I was raised between Nigerian and African-American cultures. Both cultures are beautiful and rich. They also represent two very different worlds. On my African American side, I was free to choose my educational, career, and life goals based on my desires. On my Nigerian side, I felt less freedom to set these goals because cultural expectations made it feel as if they were already chosen for me.

Many days, I felt overwhelmed by all the different cultural expectations from both identities around me. These pressures made it challenging to express my true self, especially at school.

“With maturity and through my professional experiences with youth whose experiences mirrored mine, I’ve come to believe that we should never have to hide who we are..

This belief drives all my work. My core mission remains the same across all my roles — to create a world where our identities are recognized, honored, and included in educational, digital, and societal spaces.

“Dr. Lakeya Afolalu has a deep appreciation for every student’s identity, including cultural heritage, personal interests, and unique strengths. All these characteristics make her not only an outstanding professor and former classroom teacher but also a true leader of others.”
